That, I don't know... (All I can say is that it has nothing - as far as I know - to do with a long-mooted, planned, discussed to death and 20 years overdue, new international airport, for Manila...)
Amazing. They built bridges to last, in those days...
We have had to replace the entire bridge decks on two of the bridges on the GCR - and undertaken extensive refurbishment works on a third one - all within the City of Loughborough. (These were constructed during the last 2 or 3 years of the 19th century...)
So we have gone from 500 years, (for an old stone-built bridge); to 170 plus years; to 100 plus years - for the life span of a bridge. To... what? 50 years? If we are lucky?
