Situated on the railway between Farnham and Alton (in Wrecclesham) sits River Lane bridge. This was constructed in 1852 and still carries trains across it some 172 x years later. This view was on a wet Sunday afternoon walking up River Lane towards Farnham.

Amazing. They built bridges to last, in those days...

We have had to replace the entire bridge decks on two of the bridges on the GCR - and undertaken extensive refurbishment works on a third one - all within the City of Loughborough. (These were constructed during the last 2 or 3 years of the 19th century...)

So we have gone from 500 years, (for an old stone-built bridge); to 170 plus years; to 100 plus years - for the life span of a bridge. To... what? 50 years? If we are lucky?
