That was me photographing the photographer! When I uploaded this, over 18 years ago, I referred to the photographer as an Old Japanese man. Now, at the time of writing, (October 2024), I am 66 years young myself! When editing this image description, I also realized that the Photographer could well be Korean, Vietnamese - or even an American Citizen, for all I know! So here we go, with an updated, (2024) description of this image... A spritely young man taking pictures of "sakura" (cherry trees) in full blossom, in the Peace Park outside the Atomic Bomb Museum in Nagasaki, Japan Photo taken in spring - (cherry blossom season - obviously!) - 2006© Photo by Vic Rolfe. These are actually wind turbines - not windmills!! They are designed and used for generating renewable energy in the form of electricity from the wind. As opposed to "windmills," which, as the name suggests, were used for milling grain in times gone by... -- got the information from wikipedia -- https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windmill Located at Tanay, Rizal1 point -

Malate, Manila - March 2005 Unfortunately, when I reduced the image file for posting on a previous version of ArtFreaks, I never thought to keep the original high resolution image file. Another epic failure! Oh well... The hair turned-out quite nice, I suppose. I'm all out of leave again. I'll have one last attempt at making a half-decent portrait for Resley when I get back next time...1 point -

My first ever painting that was not based on a photograph! This is a purely fictitious scene that I just concocted-up in my imagination. It is supposed to be a view through an old country cottage window, somewhere in the South of England on a warm, sunny morning. The garden pool has some koi swimming around in it and the bench is just waiting for me to take out my coffee and sit on it to watch the koi! From the album: Have a go!
This is what my studio looks like. I find it ideal for pastel painting as the floor is tiled - so very easy to brush or mop clean. It has plenty of windows - so nice and bright with plenty of natural light and quite breezy, which is very important for me in the Philippines. Note the cheap plastic trays, mounted in a portable rack for storing my different colors - and the "angle-poise" lamp for working in the evenings...1 point -

This was my second attempt at this painting. The first one ended-up in the bin after getting severely overworked. My apologies to Resley. I will have to have a go at a different photo next time... — in Manila.1 point -

Just a quick pastel painting of a Filipina teenage girl, cellphone in-hand, texting away in the doorway of a rural cottage where I used to visit in the Southern Philippines. From one of my own photos. I don't know why but I can never seem to get the faces right on either of the two youngest sisters in that family... A not very good attempt at making a copy from a family photo. Never mind... I was quite happy with some of the background - and these things can only get better! From the album: Have a go!
This painting was done in my spare time, whilst working aboard a ship, (the c.s. Wave Venture, berthed alongside in the Port of Victoria B.C., Canada in December, 2006) As you can see, my cabin was fairly cramped. There was also a limit as to what I could carry with me from the Philippines, (where I live.) I was working from an image on my laptop and I took the photo, on which the painting is based, during a recent trip to Magsaysay in Davao del Sur, Mindanao, in the Southern part of the Philippines. You can see the original photo on my Mindanao album and it is entitled Palayan Sunset Paper used was a very lightweight watercolor paper. I would have prefered a proper pastel paper but this was all I could find in one of the National Bookstore branches that I visited before leaving home. Aside from the laptop and paper, you can see a small selection of watercolor paints, one small brush and a collection of Rembrandt pastels - which I bought at Diovir Art Store in Sta. Cruz, Manila. Fixative is very conspicuous by it's absense here - only because I didn't have any. (I like to work my paintings up in layers and, with pastels, fixative is absolutely essential for this method - at least in the early and mid-stages...) The can of beer on the desk is optional!1 point -

Soft pastels on rough watercolor paper. 21 1/2" x 14" (54cm x 36cn) From one of my own photos of some rice fields in Mindanao, taken just before the planting season. Started some time in 2009 (September, I think?) Finished in June 2010!! This painting could have been done in a couple of days. (I made a rough outline in pastel and went over this with a water wash in order to tone the background - so I had to wait a day for that to dry... Otherwise I could have finished this in a few hours...) It took me about 9 months!!! I dunno... I just couldn't seem to find the time for painting. And when I did have the time, I couldn't get in the mood. Anyway, I am glad it is finished now and I have already started the next one. (My next painting is erotic art and it doesn't meet the Guidelines for this site. So you will not see it here, even if I ever do get around to finishing the thing!!) From the album: Some more recent pastel paintings
Just a small pastel painting that I done as a way of remembering Shoubi's best mate, Jumong - who sadly died while I was away on my recent commission at sea. The official story that I was given was that Jumong got sick and died. Not surprising really, as he spent most of the last months of his life in misery, tied up on a short piece of chain and hardly cared for. More likely though, he would have been killed for food? Despite the appalling conditions under which he was being kept, Jumong was a tough little dog... Anyway, whether he died, or was killed, I know for a fact that Jumong's carcass was not wasted. He did not get buried and he certainly had no flowers. So I decided to use a bit of artistic license and put some in the painting for him... 18 1/2" (47cm) x 12 1/2" (32cm) soft pastels on Saunders Waterford rough watercolor paper To purchase a high quality print of this image, please visit: ArtWanted.com Various gift items and dozens of personalized products such as mouse pads, t-shirts, greeting cards, mugs, puzzles and a lot more besides are also available, customized with this image at ArtWanted.com© © Vic Rolfe

From the album: Have a go!
Now that I had solved the buckling problem, I just sprayed some fixative over the whole thing, waited 20 minutes for it to dry and then started to add further layers of pastel to start filling in some of the detail... I was unable to bring any fixative with me because you are not allowed to bring aerosols or even solvents in bottles with you on the plane... not even in your check-in baggage. However, I was lucky in that, when I arrived on the ship, I found out that we would be in port for some time and I was able to go up the road to buy some proper fixative. Had this not been the case, I was planning to make my own onboard - using some ordinary wood varnish, highly diluted with alcohol. (I have no idea how that would have worked out, never having tried it before - but like I said before, if budget or availability of resources are stretched, you have to make do with what you've got. But don't let that put you off painting!)1 point
