It can be very dark in the middle of the tunnel. (There are, apparently, some solar-powered lights in the tunnel - but I have never seen them working yet...) Shute Shelve Hill is one of the Mendip Hills of Somerset, SW England. The old Strawberry Line Railway ran through a tunnel, whilst the modern A38 road was constructed through a series of cuttings in the same area.
