Wightlink’s Car Ferry “Victoria of Wight” is sailing across the Solent from Portsmouth Gunwharf to Fishbourne on the Isle of Wight. In the meantime the “Morning Post” belonging to the Eukor shipping line (a vehicle transporter) approaches from Southampton at the start of a long journey which will see her ultimately arrive in Durban, South Africa.

A gale force Westerley wind is blowing off the Solent across Ryde Pier on the Isle of Wight. There has been a lot of heavy rain, but this has passed by. However a squally shower is passing over the city of Portsmouth which is being caught in the setting Sun causing this beautiful, but short lived rainbow.

Heavy rain and strong winds have lashed the Solent all day. The rain has passed over, but there is still a Force 8 Westerley wind blowing in as the Sun sets across the Isle of Wight. The view was taken from inside Wight Ryder II (as tge outside decks were closed) and the spray from the sea can be seen on the window.

A beautiful study of Island Line’s Unit 484 002 waiting at Ryde St Johns Road Station with the setting Sun casting its golden rays on the train and the wet track. After 2 x days of heavy rain, the track about a mile away is heavily flooded and sadly the train will be going nowhere for the rest of the day.

Petworth Station in West Sussex last saw a train in 1966, but today is a wonderful Bed & Breakfast Hotel. Some of the accommodation is based in 4 x Beautifully restored Pullman Coaches built circa 1914. This view shows 4 of the Coaches (a fifth one is under restoration) on a Sunny October morning.

With the downs above Ventnor in the distance, Shanklin Station glows in the late Dusk. The Sun has gone, the temperature has dropped and the lights are on. A few passengers are waiting for the train back to Ryde Pier Head in the cold evening. Shanklin is the end of the line for trains on Island Line, but the railway once carried on another 5 x miles or so to Ventnor.

The last ocean going paddle steamer, the PV Waverley spends it life providing pleasure cruises around the UK. Here she is in the calm waters of the Solent heading to Portsmouth Harbour ready for a cruise around the Isle of Wight. This picture was taken from aboard Wight Ryder I crossing to the Isle of Wight, and there is a bit of grime on the windows!
