  7. From the album: My early attempts at pastel painting

Kashmiri children warm their hands over a fire in Drangyari, 130 km Northwest of Srinagar, November 20, 2005... soft pastel on Canson Mi Tientes paper. From a Reuters photograph that appeared in the Philippine Daily Inquirer of November 22, 2005 It looks a bit cartoonish but I was very happy with the outcome of this painting. Probably my best effort to date.
  8. From the album: My early attempts at pastel painting

The caption to the photograph from which I copied this read: "Perfect skin, long shiny hair." I didn't quite manage to capture the gloss of her hair but I was reasonably happy with this for a beginner... Soft pastel on Canson Mi Tientes paper. From a photo that appeared in the Philippine Daily Inquirer of November 18, 2005 This painting is no longer available for sale. (I gave it away to my very good friend Lito; the keyboard player in an excellent Filipino band called "Flix")

From the album: My early attempts at pastel painting

Mercedita Manipol carries the Philippine flag in a victory lap around the Rizal oval after winning the women's 10,000m final, that sparked a run of 20 gold medals in day 2 of the South East Asia Games, which were held in Manila, November, 2005 Soft pastel on Canson Mi Tientes paper. Janet

From the album: My early attempts at pastel painting

This was my attempt at a soft pastel painting based on a photograph that I took of the lovely Janet from General Santos City in Mindanao, Philippines. The photograph on which this painting was based can be seen on my portfolio at: ArtWanted.com

  12. From the album: My early attempts at pastel painting

"On Iya: cotton jersey tank with hibiscus print..." Soft pastel on Canson Mi Tientes paper. From a fashion feature that appeared in the Lifestyle section of the Philippine Daily Inquirer of November 18, 2005 (I didn't put the hibiscus design on the shirt as my pastel was already too thick.) This painting is NOT available for sale; since I couldn't make up my mind as to whether it was worth framing or not - so I burnt it!!
  13. From the album: My early attempts at pastel painting

From a newspaper photograph... This one went a bit wrong to begin with! But rather than destroying the initial attempt and starting again, I decided to use it for a bit of mixed-media experimentation. I covered the original face with acrylic modelling paste - with some sand mixed in. The sand wasn't as fine as I thought it was, so the result was a very rough surface with the original face still showing through. I went over this with some fairly soft Rembrandt pastels. The result is quite unusual but I rather like it. (Certainly better than nothing - which is what I would have ended up with if I'd thrown the initial attempt away!) It's quite unnerving... When you first look at her, she has a young girl's face but, when you look closely, she has the skin of a 90 year old woman!!!

From the album: My early attempts at pastel painting

    Nikki Gil

From the album: My early attempts at pastel painting

Soft pastel on paper. This portrait painting of Nikki Gil was from a photograph by Ernie U. Sarmiento that appeared in the Philippine Daily Inquirer of November 6, 2005. The photograph accompanied an article, "Nikki Gil - This Nice Girl," by Ruel S, de Vera. This one was my 5th attempt at this painting... I'm still not satisfied with it - even as a beginner... (In the first one, I was well satisfied with Nikki's face - but I managed to make her shoulder totally abnormal! The second, third and 4th ALL ended up in the bin.) I'll leave this one for a bit and try again some other time...
  17. From the album: My early attempts at pastel painting

This portrait painting was a free commission of 3-year-old Juan Miguel for his father, Paul. Paul is one of the floor managers at the Hotel La Corona in Ermita, Manila, where I stay. Soft pastel on paper. From a photo that Paul loaned me for the commission.

    Shazny

From the album: My early attempts at pastel painting

Soft pastel on paper. Shazny Zabua, grand daughter of Boy Lugaw and Annie - owners of the tindahan in Arquiza St., Ermita, Manila where I usually chill-out with a couple of cold San Miguel beers! This painting was done by way of a (free) "commission" for Annie. It was copied from a photograph that Annie supplied.

    Paloma

From the album: My early attempts at pastel painting

Soft pastel on paper. This painting was my first ever paid commission!! Paloma very kindly bought me a nice cold bottle of San Miguel beer at the Amazonia Bar in Ermita, Manila for this! As it was the first time anyone had ever given me anything in exchange for one of my paintings, the gesture was very much appreciated! And when you are a poor, working student in the Philippines, 85 pesos for a bottle of beer is no small amount of money... So thanks very much indeed, Poloma! From a photo that Paloma lent me for this portrait.
  20. From the album: My early attempts at pastel painting

Soft pastel on paper. Katsy (the handsome guy with dark glasses!) and his beautiful wife, Nhancel. Nhancel is a waitress at Amazonia Bar in Ermita, Manila. I did this portrait, (by way of a "free beer commission") This painting was done from a photo which Nhancel lent me for the portrait.
  21. From the album: My early attempts at pastel painting

Soft pastel on paper. Another practice painting. Copied from a newspaper adverticement for Ruston's shopping malls in Manila, Philippines. In the advert, the two girls had fairy wings and they were rushing off to do their christmas shopping!
  22. From the album: My early attempts at pastel painting

Soft pastel on paper. This painting was done from a photo in the Philippine Daily Inquirer of two kids crushing gold ore.
  23. From the album: My early attempts at pastel painting

This pastel painting was done by way of an atempt at one of the "Creative Pastel Projects" in the book: Creative Pastel Techniques , with an introduction by Ian Sidaway.
