About Me

  1. Most cities in England have a Cathedral, but it is an often a mistaken belief that a city must have one to qualify as a city. It does not, and is actually dependent on whether a “Royal Charter” has been granted. Portsmouth is unusual insofar as it has 2 x Cathedrals; a Roman Catholic and and Anglican one. This is the Anglican one in area of the city known as “Old Portsmouth” and is seen here from Camber Dock after the storm clouds have passed over.

  2. Camber Dock is in Portsmouth a city on the South Coast of England. It is an important military and commercial port, and the home of the UK’s Royal Navy. In this shot from Camber Dock, the landmark Spinnaker Tower, Ben Ainslie Sailing Centre, Gunwharf Ferry Terminal and the wonderful Bridge Tavern can be seen against the backdrop of the passing storm clouds. High tide is also approaching as can be seen by the water levels in the Dock.

  3. The Sun is briefly caught below the clouds as it sets over Gosport

  4. Another view of the storm clouds across the Solent showing some of the shipping activity to and from the Isle of Wight.

  5. Looking across the Solent from Portsmouth to the Isle of Wight, the heavy storm clouds gather.

  6. Looking towards the town of Gosport from the Round Tower beach in Portsmouth (at the Harbour mouth) the Sun is setting putting the old Diving Tower into silhouette. The Isle of Wight and Haslar Hospital can be seen in the background.

  7. Gunwharf is a former naval facility in Portsmouth which has been rebuilt as a shopping and recreational centre. The Spinnaker Tower is an iconic sight along the South Coast and here we see the Sunset silhouetting both the tower and one of the original naval cranes.

  8. The Sunset is framed between the Bridge Tavern and the Ben Ainslie Sailing Centre in Portsmouth.

  9. HMS Queen Elizabeth, one of the UK Royal Navy’s 2 x Aircraft Carriers moves gently through the Solent past her home port of Portsmouth to carry out sea trials off the Isle of Wight in the English Channel.

  10. Culver Down is a cliff at the Eastern side of the Isle of Wight. Heavy rain over the city of Portsmouth (north of Culver and across the Solent) and sunshine from the Isle of Wight creates a rainbow over the cliff.

  11. Rain is still evident across the Solent, but all is calm across Sandown Bay looking towards Culver.

  12. A familiar view of Camber Dock in Portsmouth with the MV Victoria of Wight in the distance waiting to sail on the 17:00 departure to Fishbourne on the Isle of Wight. In the foreground, waiting its next sailing is the MV St Claire with the iconic Spinnaker Tower visible to the right, and the Ben Ainslee sailing centre to the left ( or should that be “Starboard” or “Port”)?

  13. A wonderfully cluttered view of Camber Dock in Old Portsmouth! Local fishing vessels jostle with Wightlink ferries against the backdrop of the wonderful Bridge Tavern, Ben Ainslie Sailing Centre and the iconic lipstick shaped Number 1 Gunwharf Quays tower block.

    Ryde Pier

An Island Line Class 484 has just left Ryde Esplanade on the way to meet the ferry at Ryde Pier Head. This unusual view is taken from Union Street in Ryde and shows a wet day across the Solent, but the city of Portsmouth is visible through the rain.

  15. A beautiful night time study of HMS Warrior at the Historic Dockyard in Portsmouth.

  16. Wight Ryder I creates a wake behind it on a sailing from Ryde to Portsmouth and seems to be running from the setting Sun over the Isle of Wight!

  17. One of Portsmouth’s best pubs! The Bridge Tavern sits on Camber Dock and is a Fullers Brewery house. Great beer!

  18. Fuggletim

    Camber Dock

The Isle of Wight Car Ferry MV St Clare rests in Portsmouth’s Camber Dock with the iconic Spinnaker Tower providing the backdrop. It’s sister ship, MV St Faith can be seen beyond leaving for Fishbourne on the Isle of Wight.

  19. A gale force Westerley wind is blowing off the Solent across Ryde Pier on the Isle of Wight. There has been a lot of heavy rain, but this has passed by. However a squally shower is passing over the city of Portsmouth which is being caught in the setting Sun causing this beautiful, but short lived rainbow.

  20. A heavy rain shower and bright sunshine combine to form a beautiful rainbow across the Solent. The city of Portsmouth is obscured by the rain on the right of the picture. This shot was taken from the Ryde Castle Hotel in Ryde, Isle of Wight.

    Spray!

Quite strong winds are making the passage into the Ryde terminal for the Hovercraft seen in another picture awkward! There is a lot of spray as it tries to come onshore!

  22. An early evening Hovertravel Hovercraft approaches the Ryde terminal on the short crossing from Portsmouth in the distance.

  23. About 4 x miles of the Solent separate the City of Portsmouth from the Town of Ryde on the Isle of Wight. This is the view across the Solent towards Portsmouth on a beautiful and sunny late Winter/Early Spring day!

  24. A dramatic skyscape sees early sunset across the Solent from Portsmouth to the Isle of Wight. The now decomisioned " Diving Tower" at Fort Blockhouse in Gosport forms a backdrop.

  25. An evocative picture of late Sunset at Camber Dock in Portsmouth.
