  1. Class 484 004 approaches Yarbridge (about 1/4 mile South of Brading) on its way to Shanklin on the Isle of Wight.

  2. Class 484 004 has departed Brading on the Isle of Wight’s Island Line on its way to Shanklin. The double track reduces down to a single track. This picture was taken from the Barnes Crossing where a public footpath crosses the railway, in case anyone thinks I was trespassing! 😄

  3. This picture was taken at 21:43 hrs and it is a night shot. This can be seen by looking at the illuminated neon signs of the “New Village Inn” on the left of the picture. This photo captures a bright flash of lightning which temporarily turns the night into day!

  4. The Red Squirrel Trail is a cycleway and footpath on the Isle of Wight. Between Shanklin and Wroxall the path follows the old railway (which closed in 1966) before diverting away. Sadly the remaining old railway route onto the terminus in Ventnor is largely inaccessible and/or built over.
  5. On the Red Squirrel Trail just outside Shanklin, a long disused Fogman’s Hut stands on the approach to Shanklin where the “Distant” Signal would have stood. In foggy weather, the Fogman would place an audible explosive device called a “Detonator” on the rails to warn the Driver of a train they were approaching a “Stop Signal.” This type of regulation ceased on the British railway network many years ago, but there are many of these old huts still standing!
  6. The site of Wroxall Station between Shanklin and Ventnor was closed in 1966 and the railway lifted. All that remains now the bridge carrying Castle Street over the old railway and part of the Station buildings (not seen and behind the photographer).
  7. Under an old bridge on the Red Squirrel Trail, two old “Chairs” that once held rails onto sleeper now rust away in silence.
  8. Shortly before Sunrise, the sea of the English Channel looks a beautiful and dramatic calm.

  9. It’s 06:35 and the Sun has just peeped over the English Channel. The view is from Shanklin Chine at Shanklin on the Isle of Wight.

  10. Moving down onto the Esplanade on Shanklin Seafront, the Sun has now climbed higher on a beautiful morning. Sadly the beautiful morning didn’t last as heavy rain and thunder became the prevailing conditions later in the day!

  11. A Island Line Class 484 Unit pulls away from Ryde St John’s Road into the approaching rain on its way to Shanklin on the Isle of Wight.

  12. A “Up” train from Shanklin to Ryde Esplanade on Island Line waits in the February sunshine at Brading for the “Down” train to pass.

  13. Island Line’s 484 003 is waiting for departure time at Brading en route to Shanklin on a February evening.

  14. A Class 484 Unit makes a ghostly image as it makes its way across Ryde pier towards Ryde Esplanade Station on an evening working to Shanklin on the Isle of Wight.

  15. Unit 484 001 has the Signal (as shown by the “Off Indicator”) to depart with 2D23 18:00 Ryde Esplanade to Shanklin service on Island Line. A beautiful study of 484 001 in the low sunlight.

  16. With the downs above Ventnor in the distance, Shanklin Station glows in the late Dusk. The Sun has gone, the temperature has dropped and the lights are on. A few passengers are waiting for the train back to Ryde Pier Head in the cold evening. Shanklin is the end of the line for trains on Island Line, but the railway once carried on another 5 x miles or so to Ventnor.

  17. 484 002 on Island Line, waits to depart from Brading with 2D39 15:16 Ryde St Johns Road to Shanklin. The Signal is Green and departure is imminent!

    © Tim Penycate

  18. The "Down Starter" Signal (Semaphore) at Ryde St John's Road Station on the Isle of Wight Island Line shows the route ahead to Shanklin is clear! A wonderful atmospheric shot of Island Line by night!

  19. The Moon reflects across Sandown Bay from Shanklin on the Isle of Wight. There are ships at anchor out in the bay, but look carefully and you can see Selsey Bill Lighthouse lit!

  20. A view of the rising Moon contrasting with street lighting across Sandown Bay.
