About Me

  1. A cold November day sees the setting sun across Portsmouth Harbout over the former HMS Dolphin building. Although a nice, but cold day, the clouds indicate a change of weather is coming and indeed over the next 12 x hours almost 1.5 x inches of rain fell!

  2. The Sun is briefly caught below the clouds as it sets over Gosport

  3. Another view of the storm clouds across the Solent showing some of the shipping activity to and from the Isle of Wight.

  4. Looking across the Solent from Portsmouth to the Isle of Wight, the heavy storm clouds gather.

  5. Looking towards the town of Gosport from the Round Tower beach in Portsmouth (at the Harbour mouth) the Sun is setting putting the old Diving Tower into silhouette. The Isle of Wight and Haslar Hospital can be seen in the background.

  6. Gunwharf is a former naval facility in Portsmouth which has been rebuilt as a shopping and recreational centre. The Spinnaker Tower is an iconic sight along the South Coast and here we see the Sunset silhouetting both the tower and one of the original naval cranes.

  7. Wight Ryder II arrives at Ryde Pier in calm waters on the 15:15 Wightlink sailing across the Solent from Portsmouth Harbour on a sunny September afternoon. It will now form the 15:45 sailing back.

  8. HMS Queen Elizabeth, one of the UK Royal Navy’s 2 x Aircraft Carriers moves gently through the Solent past her home port of Portsmouth to carry out sea trials off the Isle of Wight in the English Channel.

  9. Victoria of Wight is the largest and newest Wightlink vessel on the cross Solent car ferry between Portsmouth Gunwharf and Fishbourne on the Isle o& Wight. She is seen here docking at Fishbourne on a lovely Sunny day on the 11:00 sailing from Portsmouth ready for the 12:20 crossing back.

  10. Culver Down is a cliff at the Eastern side of the Isle of Wight. Heavy rain over the city of Portsmouth (north of Culver and across the Solent) and sunshine from the Isle of Wight creates a rainbow over the cliff.

  11. Rain is still evident across the Solent, but all is calm across Sandown Bay looking towards Culver.

  12. Fuggletim

    Ryde Pier

An Island Line Class 484 has just left Ryde Esplanade on the way to meet the ferry at Ryde Pier Head. This unusual view is taken from Union Street in Ryde and shows a wet day across the Solent, but the city of Portsmouth is visible through the rain.

  13. Wight Ryder I creates a wake behind it on a sailing from Ryde to Portsmouth and seems to be running from the setting Sun over the Isle of Wight!

  14. Italian cruise ship “Aidaprima” has left Southampton en route to Le Havre and is making here way west through the Solent during late dusk. This picture was taken from Ryde Pier on the Isle of Wight.

  15. A little later than the previous picture, Wight Ryder 2 is now travelling along the channel (a “Port” side marker buoy can be seen) to its dock in Portsmouth Harbour. The Sun has nearly gone and the already sub-zero temperatures start to fall further!

  16. Seen from the Sun Deck at the stern of Wight Ryder 2 the Sun sets across the Isle of Wight.

  17. Wightlink’s Car Ferry “Victoria of Wight” is sailing across the Solent from Portsmouth Gunwharf to Fishbourne on the Isle of Wight. In the meantime the “Morning Post” belonging to the Eukor shipping line (a vehicle transporter) approaches from Southampton at the start of a long journey which will see her ultimately arrive in Durban, South Africa.

  18. A gale force Westerley wind is blowing off the Solent across Ryde Pier on the Isle of Wight. There has been a lot of heavy rain, but this has passed by. However a squally shower is passing over the city of Portsmouth which is being caught in the setting Sun causing this beautiful, but short lived rainbow.

  19. Heavy rain and strong winds have lashed the Solent all day. The rain has passed over, but there is still a Force 8 Westerley wind blowing in as the Sun sets across the Isle of Wight. The view was taken from inside Wight Ryder II (as tge outside decks were closed) and the spray from the sea can be seen on the window.

  20. The largest warship in the world, the USS Gerald R Ford pays a courtesy visit to the UK. It is far to big to anchor in the Royal Navy Dockyard in Portsmouth, so sits at anchor off of Stokes Bay in the Solent.

  21. A heavy rain shower and bright sunshine combine to form a beautiful rainbow across the Solent. The city of Portsmouth is obscured by the rain on the right of the picture. This shot was taken from the Ryde Castle Hotel in Ryde, Isle of Wight.

  22. The Sun is slowly setting, but is obscured by the clouds over West Ryde on the Isle of Wight looking towards Cowes and Osbourne House (former residence of Queen Victoria).

  23. A view over the Solent from Ryde Pier on the Isle of Wight showing the clouds over Fawley Oil Refinery. It has been a stormy day, but that has now passed.

  24. HMS Warrior is anchored in Portsmouth Harbour and although still technically a “Royal Navy” ship, it is now a museum. The ship is captured here at low tide on a lovely September morning.

  25. The last ocean going paddle steamer, the PV Waverley spends it life providing pleasure cruises around the UK. Here she is in the calm waters of the Solent heading to Portsmouth Harbour ready for a cruise around the Isle of Wight. This picture was taken from aboard Wight Ryder I crossing to the Isle of Wight, and there is a bit of grime on the windows!
